Claude Lévi-Strauss (French pronunciation: [klod levi stʁos]; (28 November – 30 October ) was a French anthropologist and ethnologist, and has been called the "father of modern anthropology". He argued that the "savage" mind had the same structures as the "civilized" mind and that human characteristics are the same everywhere. These observations culminated in his famous book. Claude Lévi-Strauss, the 'father of modern anthropology' and author of the classic Tristes tropiques, was one of the most influential intellectuals of the second half of the twentieth century. Dislodging Sartre, Camus and de Beauvoir from the pinnacle of French intellectual life in the s, he brought about a sea change in Western thought and inspired a generation of thinkers and writers.
